Low water pressure at home: what to check before choosing a booster pump

A shower with a weak flow can immediately make you think about installing a pump. Before choosing equipment, establish whether the problem affects the whole home, when it happens and the actual conditions in the water supply installation.

Turn an impression into a useful description

Saying that little water comes out is a good start, but still leaves many possibilities open. Explain whether it happens with cold water, hot water or both, in one room or throughout the home. Add whether it changes when two outlets are used together or between different floors.

Also note whether it is a longstanding problem or began after a renovation, new taps or work in the building. There is no need to adjust regulators or dismantle components. Everyday observations help organise the checks without making the homeowner responsible for the diagnosis.

Checks need to account for conditions of use

Wilo relates pressure assessment to demand, outlet positions and the characteristics of the supply. An isolated measurement without explaining the conditions under which it was taken may not be enough to assess what happens when the home is in use.

Ask the professional to record where measurements are taken and what was operating. If the problem occurs only at a particular time of day, mention it so they can decide how to observe it. Comparing results from identified situations allows a solution to be discussed using evidence, rather than relying solely on a pump's advertised power.

Where communal equipment is involved, confirm who can provide its details and history. A home should not be assessed as though it were separate from the building installation supplying it.

A booster set is selected for a particular need

Variable-speed equipment can help maintain pressure within its design capacity, even as consumption changes. That does not mean any model can solve any shortage of water. The manufacturer emphasises adapting the system to the particular characteristics of the home.

A proposal should explain what behaviour it aims to improve and which checks support that choice. Also ask about the conditions for connection to the water supply, the space needed and the system's protective measures. Avoid accepting an installation based solely on one unit being more powerful than another.

Consider its location and how it will be serviced

The available location is part of the selection. The equipment's operating environment and access for inspection or replacement need considering. Mention if it is close to bedrooms or resting areas so that this is included in the assessment from the start.

Ask the quotation to identify the components included, preparation of the space and the connections each professional will make. Any additional work required should be explained before you commit. The price of a pump bought separately does not describe the cost or scope of a complete installation.

Check the improvement against an agreed situation

Once the work is complete, operation should be reviewed under the conditions that prompted the enquiry: for example, the simultaneous use that previously proved unsatisfactory. The check should relate to what was assessed and the performance of the complete system, without promising unlimited flow.

Aqualaga can assess a pressure problem and consider an appropriate solution. To prepare for the visit, provide the location, number of floors, affected outlets and times of day. Documentation for an existing booster set or the communal installation will also be useful if available.

More common questions

Do I need a pump if only one tap has a weak flow?

That should not be inferred from a single outlet. The extent of the problem and its causes need checking before proposing work affecting the whole home.

Does a more powerful unit always give a better result?

Selection needs to suit the supply and demand conditions. More power, without assessing the complete installation, does not establish that the chosen equipment is the right solution.
