New-build plumbing: decisions to make before the walls are closed up

In a new home, plumbing starts long before the taps are fitted. Deciding where water will be used, how it will drain away and what needs to remain accessible helps coordinate the installation with the architecture, furniture and other equipment.

Plan for the home you will actually use

The bathroom and kitchen layout is the starting point, but it does not always cover every use. Think about the utility room, terraces, outdoor cleaning and possible changes in your household too. A connection intended for a particular purpose should be clearly identified; leaving connections without a defined use can complicate the installation and its future care.

Explain which outlets might be used at the same time and which will only be used occasionally. A home occupied all year round and one accommodating several people during the holidays present different situations. You do not need to calculate the pipework: you need to explain the habits the professional will take into account when sizing it.

Coordinate supply and drainage from the outset

Spain's Technical Building Code, the CTE, covers water supply in HS 4 and drainage in HS 5. These are separate networks that need to fit within the same project.

Moving a bathroom on a drawing may look straightforward, but the entire route to its connections needs checking. Ask for the review to consider the structure, suspended ceilings, cupboards and heating and hot-water systems. Conflicts are easier to resolve before each trade has completed its part.

A meeting using up-to-date drawings avoids people working from different versions. If the layout changes, record who will communicate the change and who will confirm that it is feasible. The latest image sent through a messaging app should not, by itself, become an instruction for the work.

Choose complete systems, not just a material

Specifying multilayer or metal pipe does not yet define an installation. Manufacturers such as Geberit document systems with their own pipes, fittings and jointing procedures. The proposal should identify the chosen solution and its applications, without assuming that parts are compatible simply because they appear to be the same size.

For the homeowner, the useful question is what will be installed and how it can be identified later. Ask for a clear description of the material, connections and accessible parts. If alternatives arise during the work, confirm that the change is assessed as a whole and recorded in the final documentation.

Keep access available for the future

A valve may be accessible in an empty home but hidden behind a drawer once the kitchen is fitted. Review its position against the final furniture layout: opening an access panel, removing equipment or attending to a connection should not depend on dismantling something nobody had considered.

Check the hot-water equipment areas as well. The equipment's location needs coordinating with its connections and the servicing space required by that model. Provision for an extension is useful when it explains what it allows; an empty space without a defined purpose does not guarantee future compatibility.

Agree what will be checked before it is concealed

Include a review with the people responsible in the programme before closing the areas that will conceal the pipework. Keep photographs organised by room, changes to routes and component references. This record helps explain the installation once the finishes prevent you from seeing it.

As a Red Málaga speciality, Aqualaga allows plumbing and drainage to be considered within the coordination of your home's installations. To start an assessment, a drawing and a list of outstanding decisions are more useful than a general request for a price per water connection.

More common questions

Do I need to choose all the taps before work starts?

It is worth finalising models that affect connections or concealed components in good time. Ask which choices affect the building work and which can be made later without redoing the installation.

Can connections be left for a future extension?

Specific future provision can be assessed. Its purpose, how it will be maintained and the checks needed when the new equipment is connected must be defined; simply leaving pipes without an agreed use is not enough.
