Slow drains, smells or gurgling: information that helps find the cause

A basin draining slowly is not the same as several fittings failing at once. Noting where and when the problem appears helps prepare a useful inspection and avoids treating every smell, noise and blockage as if it had the same cause.

Describe what happens before looking for a solution

Note which fitting has the problem and how long it has been happening. Does it occur every time or after another water outlet is used? Does it appear when you return after being away? Is there water visible outside the fitting? These questions are not asking you to diagnose the installation, but to give the professional a specific description.

A short video of the sound or the water draining can be more useful than saying the bathroom is not working properly. Avoid repeatedly triggering the symptom if water begins overflowing or appears where it should not. The priority is to limit use of the affected fitting and request an appropriate inspection.

A smell does not, on its own, identify a blockage

A trap uses a water seal to separate the air inside the home from drain odours, as Geberit explains. If there is a bad smell, that arrangement and its operation should be checked rather than assuming that a stronger cleaning product is needed.

Explain whether the smell is concentrated around one fitting, the floor or an access panel. It also matters whether it began after sanitaryware was changed or other work was carried out. This can guide the inspection, but it cannot establish remotely that a particular component is faulty.

If the bathroom is rarely used, mention it. The technician can consider its usage together with the condition of its components; you do not need to dismantle the trap to provide that information.

Distinguish one affected outlet from a wider problem

When several drains show symptoms, explain which ones and in what sequence. If other homes have noticed a problem, share that information with whoever coordinates the building. Do not assign responsibility without checks: a problem visible in one room may require inspection of a route extending beyond it.

Provide details of previous work too. Knowing what was done, when and how long the improvement lasted helps determine the next step. Repeated interventions without a record mean each visit starts with incomplete information and make it harder to distinguish a one-off solution from a recurring problem.

Use the system carefully rather than trying aggressive measures

Avoid inserting objects or mixtures of products to tackle an unidentified problem. If any product has already been used, tell the professional which one before they start. The person working on the drain needs to know what it contains and what operation is required.

Everyday prevention starts with not using the drainage system as a bin. Emasa highlights the problems caused by wipes and other hygiene waste in Málaga's sewers. Keeping them out of the toilet is a simple measure that also protects the network shared with the rest of the city.

Ask for an inspection with a clear scope

Before agreeing to work, ask what will be checked and what information will determine whether it needs expanding. Not every problem requires the same action. An assessment should distinguish the symptom attended to, the cause identified and the limits of what could be inspected.

Aqualaga can assess drain and drainage problems. To start an enquiry, provide the town, property type, affected outlets and history. Availability and scope are confirmed with the team; a chat enquiry does not constitute a scheduled visit.

More common questions

Does gurgling mean the pipe is blocked?

The sound is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Explain when it occurs and whether it coincides with other drainage or smell problems so the installation can be reviewed in context.

If the drain improves for a few days, is the problem solved?

A temporary improvement does not explain the cause on its own. If the problem returns, keep the dates and details of previous work so the next inspection does not repeat decisions without knowing the history.
