Bathroom renovation: what to check before moving fittings or choosing a shower

An attractive layout must also work with the bathroom's installations. Before buying sanitaryware or ordering a made-to-measure shower tray, check what will stay, what will move and how each item will connect to the existing pipework.

Start with the condition of your existing bathroom

Bring a sketch, general photographs and a list of problems to the first discussion: damp, smells, noise or difficulty reaching a valve. Include a floor plan and the position of the soil stack, if known. This information helps prepare for a visit, although it does not replace checks on site.

Separate out your priorities. You may want a more comfortable shower, more storage or an entirely different layout. If everything is presented as essential from the start, alternatives will be difficult to assess. Explaining which improvement matters most helps find a solution that fits the actual space.

Moving a fitting means reviewing its pipe route

Feasibility depends on the complete connection, not just the space the fitting occupies. The route and drainage conditions need assessing before the new layout is fixed.

Ask what will need opening up and which areas might be affected. In a flat, the work may need coordinating with communal elements. Agreeing access and responsibilities avoids discovering that dependency after the finishes have already been removed.

If part of the old installation is to remain, ask where the renewal ends and how the connection between the two parts will be checked. A partial renovation can be sensible, but it needs describing precisely so that the expected result matches what has been agreed.

Choose the shower together with its drainage

A slim-looking tray does not, on its own, guarantee a level-access shower. Geberit notes that planning needs to consider the available space, sealing and drainage. Check the complete solution before promising a step-free result.

Give the installer the model references for the shower and its taps. A promotional photograph does not show the connections required. Also review access to the parts that need cleaning and the instructions the bathroom user will receive. A detail that is barely visible can make a considerable difference to everyday comfort.

Consider finishes and maintenance together

Concealed components and wall-hung furniture can help organise the space, but their connections need coordinating with the design. Mark the planned access panels on the drawing and check that doors, drawers or mirrors will not prevent their use later.

If people with mobility needs will use the bathroom, explain this before choosing products. Access, supports and layout need considering together. A dimension copied from an image should not be treated as a universal solution for every person and home.

Define the work and the handover

The quotation should distinguish removal, pipework renewal, connections, sanitaryware and reinstatement of finishes. Also ask what will happen if opening up reveals conditions different from those expected. A recorded outstanding decision is more useful than a broad promise to sort everything out.

Before accepting the completed bathroom, review how it works with the people responsible and keep the product references. Aqualaga can assess the renovation's plumbing and drainage, coordinating them within Red Málaga when other installations in the home are involved.

More common questions

Does replacing a bath with a shower mean renovating the whole bathroom?

Not necessarily. The scope depends on the installation's condition, the drainage connection and the finishes affected. A visit can establish what can stay and what should be renewed.

Is it better to buy the sanitaryware before asking for a quotation?

It is preferable to check the model references that affect connections and space first. You can provide the models you like and confirm that they are suitable before making a purchase that may be difficult to change.
